For this year’s edition of HochSommer Festival, Land Art Eisenberg is pleased to present Undomestic Manners, a duo-exhibition featuring works by Rike Droescher and Philipp Röcker.
Land Art Eisenberg, a sculpture project initiated by Peter Pilz, comprises a rich collection of materials, found objects and works of art spanning over forty years of artistic creation on site. Undomestic Manners is taking place within the sculpture park of Land Art Eisenberg at the Neue Siedlung — a settlement which consists of four cabins, arranged in a semicircle, forming an open air plaza in its centre. As a memorial to a nearby Roma settlement that was destroyed during the Nazi era, the Neue Siedlung serves as a particularly poignant symbol of this year’s festival theme, On (Re)encountering Disappearance.
In the exhibition Undomestic Manners, Rike Droescher and Philipp Röcker therefore view the site not as a neutral stage, but as an active participant. The Neue Siedlung becomes an open field of research where their work enters into a dialogue with the collection, the architecture and the landscape. The two artists interfere, transform, and copy; they acknowledge and borrow what has been found — marking an attitude toward the place, its objects, and its history. In doing so, they raise questions on the origins of things: Where do they come from, what stories do they carry within them, and how does their meaning change when placed in a new light?
The exhibition presents an artistic approach that makes the creative process itself the subject of reflection. The works not only question sculpture as such, but also its conditions, its context, and its relationship to the space it inhabits.
